The Rectangle Attack - Rectangling the Serpent
نویسندگان
چکیده
Serpent is one of the 5 AES finalists. The best attack published so far analyzes up to 9 rounds. In this paper we present attacks on 7-round, 8-round, and 10-round variants of Serpent. We attack a 7round variant with all key lengths, and 8and 10-round variants with 256-bit keys. The 10-round attack on the 256-bit keys variants is the best published attack on the cipher. The attack enhances the amplified boomerang attack and uses better differentials. We also present the best 3-round, 4-round, 5-round and 6-round differential characteristics of Serpent.

New Results on Boomerang and Rectangle Attacks
The boomerang attack is a new and very powerful cryptanalytic technique. However, due to the adaptive chosen plaintext and ciphertext nature of the attack, boomerang key recovery attacks that retrieve key material on both sides of the boomerang distinguisher are hard to mount. We also present a method for using a boomerang distinguisher, which enables retrieving subkey bits on both sides of the...
متن کاملA Differential-Linear Attack on 12-Round Serpent
Serpent is an SP Network block cipher submitted to the AES competition and chosen as one of its five finalists. The security of Serpent is widely acknowledged, especially as the best known attack so far is a differential-linear attack on only 11 rounds out of the 32 rounds of the cipher. In this paper we introduce a more accurate analysis of the differentiallinear attack on 11-round Serpent. Th...
متن کاملDifferential-Linear Cryptanalysis of Serpent
Serpent is a 128-bit SP-Network block cipher consisting of 32 rounds with variable key length (up to 256 bits long). It was selected as one of the 5 AES finalists. The best known attack so far is a linear attack on an 11-round reduced variant. In this paper we apply the enhanced differential-linear cryptanalysis to Serpent. The resulting attack is the best known attack on 11-round Serpent. It r...
متن کاملFiltered Nonlinear Cryptanalysis of Reduced-Round Serpent, and the Wrong-Key Randomization Hypothesis
We present a deterministic algorithm to find nonlinear S-box approximations, and a new nonlinear cryptanalytic technique; the “filtered” nonlinear attack, which achieves the lowest data complexity of any known-plaintext attack on reduced-round Serpent so far. We demonstrate that the Wrong-Key Randomization Hypothesis is not entirely valid for attacks on reduced-round Serpent which rely on linea...
متن کاملAmplified Boomerang Attacks Against Reduced-Round MARS and Serpent
We introduce a new cryptanalytic technique based on Wagner’s boomerang and inside-out attacks. We first describe this new attack in terms of the original boomerang attack, and then demonstrate its use on reduced-round variants of the MARS core and Serpent. Our attack breaks eleven rounds of the MARS core with 2 chosen plaintexts, 2 memory, and 2 partial decryptions. Our attack breaks eight roun...
